Co-designing a pedal-powered machine to create ground-nut paste in Rhino Refugee Camp, Uganda
Date
2019
Location
Uganda
THE CHALLENGE
Ground nut paste is a staple food at Rhino Refugee Camp in Uganda, yet the existing methods used to create it are either physically painful or prohibitively expensive, creating a significant barrier for community members and local entrepreneurs to produce it.
OUR APPROACH
During the International Development Design Summit, we collaborated with a multidisciplinary team - including members of the South Sudanese refugee community - to co-design a pedal-powered attachment for a traditional ground nut mill. We fabricated the device using locally available materials and manufacturing methods, creating a more comfortable and affordable alternative to hand-crank and engine-powered machines.
THE OUTCOME
The machine was successfully implemented and adopted by a local entrepreneur, who uses it to produce and sell ground nut paste, and to offer a new service of processing ground nuts for other community members.
